Help & FAQ

Requirements

  • 1. Web Browser: Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (other browsers do not support Web Serial API)
  • 2. Serial Adapter: USB to Serial (RS-232) adapter connected to your computer
  • 3. Tech2 Device: GM Tech2 diagnostic tool with PCMCIA card slot
  • 4. Serial Cable: DB9 serial cable connecting Tech2 to your adapter

How It Works

This tool communicates directly with your Tech2 device through the serial port to perform various operations on the PCMCIA card.

Get Security Access

Reads security seeds from the card and generates corresponding unlock keys. This is required for certain diagnostic and programming operations on SAAB vehicles.

Backup Card

Creates a complete binary backup of your 32 MB PCMCIA card. The backup file can be used to restore the card if needed.

Write Card Image

Writes a binary image file to the PCMCIA card. This operation erases all existing data on the card before writing.

Troubleshooting

Cannot connect to device

Make sure Tech2 is powered on before clicking Connect. Check that your serial cable is properly connected and the correct COM port is selected.

Connection timeout

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the serial cable. Power cycle the Tech2 device and try again.

Browser not supported

Web Serial API is only available in Chrome and Edge browsers. Other browsers like Firefox and Safari do not support this feature.

Operation failed

If an operation fails, wait a few seconds, then try again. Make sure you don't disconnect the device during any operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full backup take?

A full 32 MB backup typically takes about 45 minutes at 19200 baud.

Is it safe to cancel an operation?

You can safely cancel a backup or read operation. However, cancelling a write operation may leave your card in an inconsistent state.

What file format is used for backups?

Backups are saved as raw binary files (.bin) containing the exact contents of the PCMCIA card.
